Zend Core Fast CGI Crashes

If you run into your newly installed zend core on windows crashing all over the place... it may have something to do with you forms.

Make no mistake the bug is with zend core - but it can be fixed by fixing your forms. Add
method="post" enctype="multipart/form-data">

to forms that have a post meathod.

This is particularly useful for phpMyAdmin.

The more I work with Drupal - and the more Drupal matures - the more I think "there isn't anything I couldn't write with Drupal to get a job done."

Now granted, Drupal isn't meant to be used for everything - but I sure could see using it for a whole lot more than its being used for now.

Drupal has been compared to lego. But I think Drupal is more like living organic chemistry - where simple building blocks interact to create things that are greater than the sum of their parts.

The code is alive. Improvements from release to release spawn more contributions. More contributions spawn newer ideas. Newer ideas result in greater improvements.

And Drupal is literally evolving. Each distribution of Drupal evolves to more effectively exist in an ever expanding number of niches. Two different Drupal implementations may obviously be related, but could be vastly different because they solve different problems in different ways.

Its all very exciting stuff.

My Father

Just a little before 2:30pm on January 11th 2007 my father lost his fight with cancer.

It wasn't a fair fight and he didn't stand much of a chance. After all, cancer decided to pick on the liver of a 72 year old man. Cancer attacked with a fast growing tumor and my father countered with jokes, rants about the decline of CNN and a diet of caraway soup. The jokes had me laughing, the rants had me nodding in agreement, and the caraway soup had me scratching my head. But, cancer was unfazed and the tumor took its toll.

In lieu of flowers or condolences, I request that you all celebrate life.

New HD DRM cracked

In this article we hear that a new DRM scheme has been cracked.

"Otto" who makes a comment on the article says it best.

There is no amount of protection they can ever add that will make this sort of thing impossible to do. They simply cannot prevent copying, and it's easy to explain why.

All DRM measures, work on the notion that "copying" and "viewing" are different things. They want to allow people to view the content, but not to copy it. This is clearly ludicrous. It's as if somebody gave you a book and said that you were not allowed to take a pencil and write your own copy of the book elsewhere. They can say it, but it's wholly unenforceable.

In order to display any content, your computer must read it. If it can read it, then it can write a copy somewhere. Period. This undeniable fact of reality makes all DRM pointless.

In this particular case, the author did not even do anything particularly special.

I'm a Torontonian

Well as some of you may or may not know - I have moved to Toronto. I am now a Torontonian.

It was a long and hard process to get here. The easy part was unloading my old house. It was sold in like 2 days. The hard part started with searching for a house in Toronto.

If you haven't had the pleasure of shopping for a home in Toronto you have no idea about the pain. Search search search. Shitbox after shitbox. "They want how much for that?"

Then you see something you like. "Ooooo, that's nice, and the price is good.... 'offers accepted on' monday - start the bidding war." And you lose it.

Finally we found something and almost lost it, but here we are.

Then comes the closing stress. Then packing - planning - moving - stress. Then closing the other house stress. Stress stress stress.

Then move day. 16 hours of packing + 14 hours of moving ... that adds up to more than 24 hours. Don't plan on sleeping.

But now I'm settled in - sort of. Unpacking! Painting. Arranging.

I've been know to play a hand or two of poker. Americans tend to play quite a bit of poker. But, last week US congress passed a bill that would make it harder for Americans to play their favourite game on-line.

I could try and tell you what that idea is a bad one - but instead I'll point you to Cringely's article on the topic from last week.

Internet Explorer 7 Sucks more

Every few weeks I sign on here and vent my frustration with Internet Explorer.

Random sample of problems this week:
Box model still broken.
Hex Colour rendering is FUGLY - and just plain wrong.
New antialiasing of text is BRUTAL - I have to keep rubbing my eyes to make sure its not my peepers that are causing the blur.

A simple fact is that Internet Explorer breaks the internet. It is simply impossible to design for it without wasting time. FUCK.

Google Maps Finally Shows Etobicoke

Google maps has long had satellite images of just about anywhere I wanted to see in detail. That is except for Etobicoke. Well, that is up until now.

Poor old Etobicoke used to be a fuzzy green glob on the map. But now its in high def like the rest of the world.

Way to go Etobicoke.

Coining a new phrase - Derek Envy

I'm coining a new phrase - derek envy

Defined as the feeling one gets after reading derek martin's blog entries.

Despite negative conotations of the word 'envy', derek envy is actually a good thing. A genuine appreciation of the cool stuff this guy is up to. Yeah, you wish you were doing all the things he was doing yourself, but you almost get as much of a high living vicariously.

Derek is becoming Forest Gump - just a lot brighter - and actually living with purpose as opposed to falling bass ackwards into exciting life experience.

Hats off to Derek.

72 Smoke free hours and 102 degrees

I've mentioned before that I'm not particularly appologetic about my smoking. I've talked about how I actually like to smoke (whether or not that's the addiction talking).

A while back I knew that my wisdom teeth were coming out and I also knew that you aren't supposed to smoke for at least 24 hours after the surgery lest you risk dry socket. I had also heard that you shouldnt smoke for a few days afterwards to reduce the risk of infection. So I thought if I'm not going to smoke for a couple of days - maybe I should just stop smoking altogether. Goodness knows there are benefis to quitting.

If there is ever a 'good' time to quit smoking I think it must be when you have your wisdom teeth pulled out. Your mouth is a mess. You feel like crap. You don't even want a cigarette. I know I didn't even think about having one for the first 24 hours. The next 24 hours the thought entered my mind, but I still wasn't feeling well. Then in the last 24 hours I actually had a temperature of 102 - which doesn't make you want much of anything - let alone a cigarette.
