A little while ago I was blogging about things that I am - (professionally speaking). The list is long - almost laughably so.
Today I was catching up on my blog reading (note when I don't write, I typically am not reading either)... and Derek was talking about all the things that he wants to be when he grows up.
Its weird how alike derek and I are. I mean we are totally different - but we are very much the same:
| Derek | Me |
|---|---|
| Bright guy | Check |
| Plays Chess | Check |
| Is grown up - thinks of himself as a kid | Likewise - and I'm even older |
| Doesn't know what he wants to be when he grows up | we are grown up - but I don't know what I want to be when I grow up either |
| Wants to learn and do EVERYTHING | Yup |
| Does a lot of wildly different things | no two interests the same |
| life long learner | never plan on stopping |
| Digs cool bands | hate boring bands |
| Entreprenuer (on hold) | Entrepreneur (Active) |
| Digs arts | yep again |
| Doesn't stick to any one thing for too long | Can't do the same thing for more than a few days without being distracted by something NEW |
| Etc. | etc. |
You start to get the picture.
So what do I want to be when *I* grow up.
Comic book writer/artist
Rock star
Bridge designer
Architect
Sound engineer
Political Advisor
Intellectualy Property Lawyer (working towards less restrictive IP)
Professional Golfer
Dish washer
Club DJ
Radio Programming Director
Author
A bird
But the cool thing about my approach to life (and I would bet Derek's) is that while we dream about doing all sorts of crazy things - our constant dabbling and zen learning in all of our interest areas is contstantly moving us towards all of our goals/dreams at once. We may not do any one of them - but we might do a combination of some or all at once or at different times.

Just for the record, Andre and I have never "hung out". We've met a couple times, but always with a purpose (get well soon party, networking meeting, etc). I like your perspective at the end there. Sometimes I get down on myself because I'm not really passionate and deeply into one thing. Next time I'll try to remember that I'm really making progress towards everything :)
I want to be Empress of the Universe when I grow up. I don't want the power per se, I just want to make rules that make sense.
-I would forgive all O.S.A.P. and student loans.
-I would insist that people who have a billion dollars donate $100,000 a year to charity.
-I would change Istanbul back to Constantinople just because it sounds cooler.
-I would make it mandatory that everyone who listens to crap music must spend at least 20 minutes a year exposing themselves to different music genres.
-I would make more natural sources of energy (electric or hybrid cars, wind turbines, solar powered devices for homes, etc) cheaper than polluting/wasteful ones.
-Medical professionals would have to admit they don't know what's wrong with you.
-Everyone would get a mini parade on their street for their birthday.
-Teachers would be allowed once a year to say "You know Timmy, you're a punk-ass bitch and you're failing because you're just stupid".
-Short people would all be given admission to concerts FIRST before tall people to make sure they could see what's going on.
